Most truck owners like big stuff; big wheels, big tires, big chrome and big engines.
“Monster truck” big is not practical for most truck enthusiasts but you know in their dreams they see themselves climbing up a stepladder to slide into their ride.
However, there are some truck owners who like big, but they also like low. They like the aggressive stance that “big” provides but they are really more into the “crouching tiger” look and they get it by lowering their ride an inch or two.
It’s not that hard to do as you’ll soon find out in this Belltech lowering kit review.
While appearance is probably what motivates most owners to lower their ride, there are actually some positive performance enhancements that come with the operation.
This from CarsDirect.com “Lowered suspension isn’t popular for cosmetic reasons alone; there are performance gains as well.”
Bringing the center of gravity closer to the pavement makes steering feel more like a car than a truck.
When you take those curves or a hard left or right turn you will experience less “roll” and the steering will seem more like a sports car than a big honking truck.
Braking will improve as well. Most trucks do a bit of a “nose dip” when you slam on the brakes.
Lowering your ride allows your tires to grip the road better, eliminates the dip and allows the brakes to perform more efficiently.
Then there’s the rollover factor. A lower profile increases the amount of pull required to roll the truck. This is a good thing.
In short, lowering your ride will give you a cool, sleek look and improve handling. Just be careful going over speed bumps.
So how to you get there?
The Belltech Lowering Kit
Belltech Sports Trucks was founded 25 years ago in Fresno, CA for the single purpose of creating the best performing lowering suspensions for the Chevy pickup.
The big break came when they developed their revolutionary “drop spindle” which lowered the front but kept the front end specs the same.
This led to a series of innovations in truck suspension design and today Belltech is considered the most successful truck suspension brand in the industry.
Belltech manufactures a wide line of quality suspension parts which they sell separately on performance parts sites like my friends at StylinTrucks.com but the really popular product is the lowering kits and here’s why:
The basic kit has everything you need to lower your ride. The kits are make and model specific so you are assured the right parts are provided and the stuff fits. Trying to identify and assemble all the parts you need separately for a suspension job is a major pain and you don’t know if you have done it right until you have your truck up on a jack. Convenience is cool.
The basic kit allows you to use your existing shocks but if you really want to boost performance you can upgrade to either a Nitro Drop2 or Street Performance shock depending on the model of your ride. These shocks give your ride that “crouching tiger” feel and you’ll start wondering when Monaco will start accepting pickups as entrants in the Grand Prix. Bundling the shocks with the lowering kit gets you the best value.
Installation is pretty straight forward but you need to know your way around suspensions to avoid complete frustration. You are also going to need jacks that will let you safely install the kit. You may want to consider having a shop that specializes in suspensions do the job for you. On the other hand, if you have the equipment and a good working knowledge there are no real challenges to putting the kit in yourself. Check out the video below for more details.
The Belltech lowering kit comes with a lifetime warranty which speaks volumes about the confidence the company has in both its design and the quality of its parts.
Reviews and Recommendations
Those are the benefits as I see them but let’s have a look at what drivers like you have to say about the kits they purchased on AutoAnything.com.
Reviewed by Steven S (Jacksonville, FL). Reviewed for a 2008 Ford F-150. “I recently purchased the 3/5 Belltech kit. I had the kit installed at my local tire and wheel shop. I had a slight tire rub when turning on the front due to my wheel and tire combination…. 22in wheels and 305/40 tires, other than that It rides better than stock, handles great, and looks great. I would highly recommend this kit.”
