Tough Durable and Slick
Hi Bill Smith here. A few weeks ago my friend bought a 2010 Ford F250 and immediately tricked it out with a roll-up tonneau cover. It looked pretty slick. So I wasn’t completely surprised when he pulled up in my drive yesterday to show off his truck’s new kicks. I have to admit these were some wicked looking wheels and tires and I was impressed. They were Dick Cepek Fun Country–2 tires mounted on some amazing looking Dick Cepek Wheels DC-2 wheels. I wanted to learn more about these things and that’s what inspired this Dick Cepek wheels review.
I’m going to limit this review to wheels but I have to mention the tires as well. The tread on these monsters looked like my buddy could take a shortcut across the Everglades on his next run to Miami. My friend says they are a hybrid design for off road and mud but work well on pavement. He claims they are super quiet on the road and handle surprisingly well.
Now on to the Dick Cepek wheels.
This is a fun story and I think you’ll enjoy it. First, Dick Cepek is a real guy not just a brand name and he is still active in the company even though he is an old fart like me. In 1963 he moved to South Gate, CA (outside L.A.) found an old Land Rover and set out into the Mojave to have some fun. Dick was always an off road enthusiast but this was his first time in a desert where he quickly determined that sand and conventional tires don’t mix.
He searched around and found a small tire company that had a farm implement tire that he thought was wide enough to challenge the sand. Of course now he needed a wheel wide enough to accommodate the tire and still fit the Land Rover. He found a local wheel manufacturer who agreed to make 5 custom wheels (1 for the spare) and Dick had his desert off road dream vehicle.
To test the arrangement he and his wife thought it might be a good idea to drive the entire length of the Baja Peninsula and back. The next year Dick and a buddy tried to replicate that trip in what was the very first “Baja 1,000” race and they came in second.
His hobby became a business and the rest of the story is your basic “build a better mousetrap” tale.
But that brings us to today and the DC-2
Basic Black is…Wicked!
The Dick Cepek Wheels DC-2 Machined w/Black Accent Wheels (DC-2) are aluminum wheels designed for light trucks, SUVs and 4×4 vehicles. It is a six spoke wheel done in a glossy black and machined metal finish. It looks aggressive just standing still.
The DC-2 is comfortable on road or off. It has a UV Clear Coat applied to protect it from the harshest environments and my buddy says the mud and dirt just slides off the wheel and is easy to clean.
For those thinking about “big brake” upgrades the DC-2 has the caliper clearance you’ll need to install the new brakes. This is a great feature given that OEM brakes on trucks and SUVs are not really suited for the weight or off road stresses.
Caps. What is it about caps? Wheels should come with caps. Why do some wheels come with no caps? The DC-2 advertises “cap included.” Well I guess it should seeing how the cap has Dick Cepek’s signature on it.
OK in my opinion these are truly good looking wheels and they definitely set my buddy’s truck apart from other F-250s. In fact if he does much more to it Ford isn’t going to recognize it.
From the People Who Own a Set
My opinion is just my opinion. Here is what people who bought these wheels are saying:
- This product is great and looks good. Thanks guys! ~April 16, 2013
- Matched these up with the Dick Cepek FC-II tires for a GREAT package! Tires and wheels are outstanding. Superb performance, handling and look. ~August 07, 2011
- Love the wheels, they made a heck of a difference in the looks of the pickup, but make sure you have a lift kit or fender flares. Only complaint I have is that they are starting to peel a little. Overall very satisfied and would recommend to anyone. ~March 27, 2011
- Everything went great and my wheels are very nice looking. The wheels on my truck look great. ~August 16, 2010
The DC-2 isn’t the only wheel Dick Cepek offers. There is the striking, satin black, 8 spoke “Torque” that almost looks menacing and two new models for those of you who have given a little “lift” to your ride.
All in all I find it hard to criticize a product that is obviously an extension of the original concept. Cepek loves off-roading and all of his products show it. If you are an off road enthusiast, or if you just want to look like one, I would suggest mounting your tires on Dick Cepek wheels.
