Do you want your wheels to be the hottest thing on the block?
Me too. I’m always looking for a way to get a little more out of the powerplant and I’ve stumbled across a no brainer way to do just that.
Take a few minutes and check out this K&N cold air intake review.
First of all let’s make it clear that I’m not a fanatical gearhead.
I just want to have fun driving my truck and anything I can do that doesn’t require a ton of special tools or a degree in engineering I’m all for.
That’s why a K&N cold air intake install is so attractive to me.
What’s so hot about a K&N cold air intake?
We both know that manufacturers are extremely stingy when it comes to providing cool “dense” air to the engine. Dense air has more oxygen which results in a more “explosive” combustion. OK let’s not use the word “explosive” let’s just say that the cooler the air the more efficient the combustion process which means the more power generated.
Someone once made the comparison between a manufacturer’s air intake design with a head cold. Imagine being stuffed up with a head cold and then trying to sprint a hundred yards. Now imagine a magic medicine that eliminates the stuffiness and allows you to suck in huge quantities of oxygen to fuel your sprint. A cold air intake does just that.
There are a number of manufacturers of cool air intake systems but they all have a couple of characteristics in common. These aftermarket systems move the air filter outside the engine compartment meaning they have access to cooler air. In addition, these systems are designed to get the air to the combustion chamber in pretty much a straight line rather than the bends and curves of a stock system.
Cooler air and a more direct route to where it’s needed are the big advantages of cold air intakes.
I chose to look at this product simply because K&N Engineering has a great reputation and the 63 Series is the latest and greatest in their line of performance enhancing products. To be honest, I also saw the word “kit” and that got me to thinking that this might be “model airplane” easy to install. If you watch the video on this page I think you’ll agree I wasn’t far off the mark.
So what’s the marketing department saying about this series of K&N cold air intakes? Here’s a short list of advertised features:
- This system is not street legal in California. As a former Californian I say this is enough to make you go out and buy one now.
- Guaranteed to increase horsepower (no claims as to how much).
- Lifetime warranty.
- Easy to install requiring no special tools (90 minute installation time on average).
- The air filter is removable, washable and reusable.
That’s pretty straight forward. They claim you’ll get more horsepower because it allows more cold air to get to the combustion chamber faster. For me the claim of relatively easy installation is the big draw.
I don’t mind tinkering with my car but I don’t want to spend the whole weekend working on it.
I want to take it out and drive!
What the real world is saying
There are plenty of people who have purchased this kit and who felt strongly enough to leave their comments. There are a ton of reviews for all K&N cold air intakes on Amazon.com but for this particular product there are 47 of which 36 give it 5 stars and 2 give it a 1.
Here’s a sample of what customers are saying:
Easy Installation, Another great K&N product!, January 31, 2012
By G. Harrison (NC USA)
“Instructions are easy to follow. All parts were included and the install was very easy.
Basic tools, flat screw driver, a set of Torx head bits and a couple wrenches pretty much covers it.
This really opens up the engine bay buy removing all of the factory plastic tubing.
The K&N looks clean and simple under the hood.
I did this installation along with a Cat-Back exhaust system in about 3 hours tops.
The truck has come to life! Sounds great and better throttle response!”
K&N Cold Air Intake is Awesome!!!, February 2, 2011
By Michael S Miller (WALLED LAKE, MI, US)
“I ordered this for my 2011 GMC Sierra with the 6.2L. Took me a little bit to install, but was fairly easy. The sound is amazing when I give it some gas. The power increase was awesome too. It is quiet when driving regular, and is loud and throaty when accelerating. No problems to install or after installed. First tank of gas, it gave me a little bit of an increase in MPG too. Highly recommend this for your truck. Next comes the dual exhaust. :)”
K&N Cold Air Intake for Trucks, December 9, 2012

“Best thing I have added to my 2011 Chevy Silverado. It is a must need if you have a truck or SUV.”
And the other side of the coin.

By Alvin E Brumley (Edmond, Oklahoma, US)
“I own a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado with the 5.3 engine. I am very disappointed and feel like I have been ripped off. I have checked my mpg every time I fill up since installing the K&N filter system. My mpg has decreased or remained the same.”
Summing it up
Four things stand out for me.
- First is the ease of installation although it does require drilling a single 5/8 hole which is a bit you may not have. I have to share my garage with my wife’s car and the walls are covered with lawn and storage stuff so I don’t have a “gearhead garage” to play with.
- Secondly is the reported throaty sound that comes with this cold air intake. Even though I work at home I’m thinking about cranking it up at 6:00 AM so my neighbor across the street with the F-250 can appreciate what he doesn’t have.
- If I can squeeze a couple of extra miles per gallon out of the truck because of more efficient combustion, that’s a good thing.
- Lastly, and this is strictly personal, if I can use a system that California is afraid will disrupt the tranquility of the Santa Monica Zen Garden then I’m a happy camper.
