One guy’s opinion of a pretty slick truck bed cover.
Hi, Bill Smith here. My friend just bought a two year old Ford F250 because in his words he needed “a vehicle to move stuff.” I think he bought it because it is a big honking truck and he likes the image. It’s June here in Florida and the hurricane season just started. Tropical storm Andrea just passed through dumping 4 inches of rain on us turning my friend’s truck bed into a mobile hot tub. My friend now thinks he needs a tonneau cover to “keep his stuff dry.” I think he wants one because they are cool looking and that’s what inspired this Truxedo Truxport roll-up tonneau cover review.
Let’s face it, trucks are cool and if you are like my friend you want to trick out your ride to make it look even cooler. But you have this big empty space called a truck bed that is great for hauling stuff but kind of ruins the lines when it is empty.
Keeping Your “Stuff” Covered
Truck beds are what make trucks trucks but they don’t have the convenience of car trunks. Your “stuff” is not protected from the rain, UV rays and the general crud that
floats around in our air or drips off trees (or out of birds). First time truck buyers learn pretty quickly that they could really use a tonneau cover and the only question is hard cover or roll-back tonneau cover.
If you are looking for security then a hard cover is the way to go but bring your check book. If you are looking for inexpensive protection from the environment then you seriously want to consider truck bed roll-up covers and I think you should take a hard look at the Truxedo Truxport roll-up tonneau.
Who Knew Yankton, SD Was a Hotbed of Innovative Design?
Truxedo has called Yankton, SD (population 14,478) home since 2000. I’m guessing there isn’t much to do during those frigid SD winters so it’s not really surprising that the engineers applied their considerable knowledge and came up with a superior roll-back cover. Before the Truxedo Truxport the most common type of roll-back cover involved snaps and fixed place support bows.
Snap on roll-backs require support bows crossing the truck bed. To cover the bed you have to roll the tonneau over the support bows and then start snapping it to the bed rails one at a time alternating driver and passenger side. In short it’s a pain. And if you need all of your truck bed space you have to uninstall the support bows and now you have 3 pieces of loose metal banging around in the bed.
What Makes the Truxedo Truxport Roll-up Tonneau Cover So Cool?
It starts with price but we’ll get to that later. Here’s a short run down on why your truck should be sporting a Truxedo Truxport roll-up tonneau cover:
Ease of operation. You’re not going to develop blisters on your thumb from snapping this cover in place. The Truxport uses industrial strength Velcro to attach to the side rails. Just roll out the cover and press down. Support bows are built into the cover and roll up when the cover is being stored. Opening the cover is painless thanks to two latches located near the tailgate.
Ease of installation. This cover uses a clamp on system to attach the rails to the top edge of the truck bed. No drilling and no special tools are required. The company says you can install one of these in 20 minutes but the phrase “your experience may vary” definitely applies here. Some users have said they could do it under a half hour but many say it takes an hour to an hour and a half.
Sleek, Sleek, Sleek! With no independent support bows causing “bumps in the profile”, the Truxedo Truxport roll-up tonneau fits flush giving it a classy custom look. Weather conditions will cause the cover material to stretch or contract but the Truxport has a handy thumb screw tension control located near the gate that allows you to control just how taut you want the cover to be.
Easy to Keep It Looking Sleek, Sleek Sleek! The leather grain cover material can be hand washed, machine washed or washed at a DIY high pressure wash. Just make sure that the cover is thoroughly rinsed and no soap residue is left on it. Any vinyl protectant, like Armor All, is safe to use on the cover.
What Truck Owners Are Saying
You’re not the first truck owner looking for truck bed roll up covers, thousands have come before you and thousands have purchased the Truxedo Truxport. AutoAnything.com is a favorite site for high performance auto parts and it is not surprising they carry this item. So what I’ve done is snatched some of the more recent customer reviews to share with you here:
- Reviewed by Dominick P (Staten Island, NY) Reviewed for a 2010 GMC Yukon — Mar 2009: “Good quality Cover. Very easy install (only 15 minutes) with no drilling. Very easy adjustments to keep cover looking good handled mechanical car wash with no issues.”
- Reviewed by Bruce D (Fallston, MD) Reviewed for a 2009 Toyota Tacoma — Jun 2013: “The TruXedo TruXport Tonneau is A very nice Tonneau at a Good Price. Very easy to install. It has come in very handy covering items in the bed of my truck. I would recommend purchasing one.”
- Reviewed by Michael H (San Antonio, TX) Reviewed for a 2005 Ford F-250 — May 2013: “I was a little hesitant to buy this roll-up cover because it was fairly inexpensive. Turns out it is a well-made cover and AutoAnything just has a great deal on these. I watched the install video once before I bought it and again right before I was ready to install it on my F250. This is my first roll-up cover and install took me about 20 min. Great looking, great operating cover!”
There’s another key benefit that isn’t mentioned in these reviews and it applies to all tonneau covers. According to Andrew Bernhardt’s A Guide to Saving Gas With Your Vehicle, “ installing a tonneau cover on your truck bed makes your pickup more aerodynamic and can increase your gas mileage by up to 10%.”
